Big Truck Across America - day 1

Ok, here’s the deal. We’re too old to Facebook, and too young to invite you over for coffee to watch a slideshow. The solution – a semi-live blog of the vacation. Neither of us has done this before, so this could be a train wreck, but if we enjoy it, so be it. Just to clarify, by ‘us’, I mean myself (husband/dad/driver), my wife Kimberly, and our 3.91yr old daughter Jordan. The mode of transportation for the trip has been affectionately dubbed the ‘Big Truck’ by Jordan, and it is a 2001 Coachmen Catalina Sport 24’ motorhome, seen here.

Day 1 covered just over 800 miles in roughly 12.5 hrs, bringing us from Marne, MI to Gibbon, NE. You may be wondering what is significant about Gibbon, NE. So are we. What it did have to offer was a beautiful campground roughly 1000 yards off the highway, with sites available on 3 hrs notice. It also provided 2 benefits. Benefit #1:

Benefit #2, far greater than the first, was a reward for Jordan’s patience after being a model child during her 12+ hours of captivity in the Big Truck. A few hundred feet from our site was an old-school playground, un-PCified with real steel monkey bars, and not a trace of any allergen-free pastel plastic panels wallpapered with warning stickers. I think she had a pretty good time, right up until the mosquitos sensed our ginger blood (it’s a delicacy in these parts)…

After we got back to the rig, we settled on Day 2’s destination as the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in western Colorado. A bit ambitious, but what could go wrong? As a side note, Jordan may be the most well-adjusted traveler of the 3 of us. She survived on a few episodes of SpongeBob, some key scenes of Strawberry Shortcake’s “The Sky’s the Limit” (who wouldn’t by riveted by the subplot of Blueberry Muffin getting herself out of yet another unpredictable calamity), and a steady diet of Walter the Wolf and Giraffe. Giraffe has done nothing of consequence in her eyes to earn a real name, and that means the clock is ticking.

Day 2 to follow…
